SHELTER PREPARATIONS ARE UNDERWAY
As winter approaches, preparations for the Emergency Rotating Shelter (ERS) are in full swing. Our host churches and volunteers are getting ready to welcome guests, and the Harford County Hope for the Homeless Alliance (HCHHA) is ensuring every detail is in place to provide warmth, safety, and compassion.
We are also excited to announce that most host churches have successfully completed Site Coordinator training, equipping them to oversee operations and support both guests and volunteers effectively.
Community Engagement Representatives (CERs), provided by HCHHA, will be on-site during all ERS operating hours. Each night, CERs will conduct guest check-ins and maintain a secure, supportive environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.
Our CERs are receiving specialized training and certification in key areas, including:
Mental Health First Aid – Recognizing signs of mental health challenges and substance use disorders, de-escalating crises, and connecting individuals to resources.
MANDT Training – Comprehensive behavior management and crisis prevention with trauma-informed care, emphasizing dignity, respect, and safety.
NARCAN Administration & Substance Abuse Awareness – Recognizing opioid overdose, administering NARCAN, and supporting recovery resources.
First Aid & CPR Certification – Responding effectively to medical emergencies until professional help arrives.
CER Responsibilities:
Learn guest needs, established rules, and operational procedures
Conduct nightly check-ins and maintain attendance records
Monitor the facility to ensure safety for all
Resolve conflicts using approved de-escalation strategies
Contact emergency services or Site Coordinator when needed
Volunteers are the heart of the Emergency Rotating Shelter. From preparing meals and setting up sleeping spaces to offering fellowship and support, every act of service makes a difference. Hosting and serving at the shelter is more than a task—it’s a chance to embody Christ’s love in a practical, life-changing way.
Whether you have a few hours or a full evening to give, your participation brings hope to those experiencing homelessness. Every meal served, every conversation shared, and every prayer offered reminds our guests that they are valued, loved, and not forgotten.
If you're interested in getting involved in our effort, please watch this video which outlines how churches and individuals can help out! We're happy to talk to you about new and exciting ways you can plug in.
Get involved. Make a difference. Bring hope.
If you’re interested in helping feed those in need, we invite you to join Revive Us Ministries on Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting at 10:30 AM in Aberdeen.
This is a wonderful opportunity to serve our community and build relationships with those who will be participating in the Rotating Homeless Shelter before it begins. Learn more about the ministry at reviveusministries.org.
Your church's involvement—whether as a host, a sponsor, or in another capacity—can help fill critical gaps in care during these cold months. We’d love to partner with you in this mission to provide hope and shelter to those in need.
